Sharp-Healy Family

The Story of the first two Generations

Ernest John Sharp, 1866-1931

Ernest John Sharp was the eldest son of John Edwin Sharp and his first wife Theodosia Emma Hann.

He was born on 17 February 1866 at Blackheath.

At some point early in life, Ernest came to New Zealand, as he was recorded in the 1887 and 1890 general elections as being resident at Maclaggen Street, Dunedin. In the 1871 Census in England, he was recorded as being 5 years of age.

We know nothing of Ernest's life in England or New Zealand, but we have discovered that he died in Australia. Investigations online have located his death and funeral notices, and death registration. Ernest died in Redfern, Sydney in 1931 and his family is listed (See References.) Also there's a NSW BDM marriage entry showing Ernest J Sharp married Rose Sherwin on 16 June 1900 in Sydney (Ref 5096/1900) and Ancestry Australia Marriage Index.

Ernest and Rose are listed in the 1913 Campsie electoral rolls as painter and domestic duties. In the 1930 rolls, Ernest is listed individually as a painter, of London Street.

An entry on Thursday 16 July 1931 in the Sydney Morning Herald states: "Sharp, July 15, 1931, at Redfern. Ernest John, dearly beloved husband of Alma Sharp, and loving father of Vera, John and Alice, aged 65 years." It appears Rose Sharp died in 1927.

And his funeral notice the next day states: "Sharp, the friends of the late E J Sharp and family of 6 London Street, Campsie, are invited to attend his funeral, to leave the Private Mortuary Chapel of Motor Funerals Ltd, 30 City-road, city, this morning, at 10.15 for Crematorium, Rookwood, per motor service."

Also on Friday 17 July, the Sydney Morning Herald reports: "Sharp - Campsie Lodge No 125, I.O.O.F. Officers and members of the above Lodge are cordially invited to attend the funeral of their late member, Bro. Ernest J Sharp, to leave the private Mortuary Chapel of Motor Funerals Ltd, 30 City-road, city, this morning, at 10.15 for Crematorium Rookwood, per motor service. W C Best NG, R.C Lambert, Secretary."

There is a Rose Sharp, recorded death published on Monday 17 October 1927 in Canterbury, NSW. [The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Mon 17 Oct 1927 Page 10 Family Notices]. The notice reads: 'SHARP - October 15, at her residence, London Street, Campsie, Rose, wife of E.J. Sharp.' Burial Rookwood Cemetery, Zone C Section 09 Grave 1187.

John married Alma Jackson in Canterbury, New South Wales in 1929 (Ancestry listing, BDM NSW 15888/1929). No newspaper record can be found of this marriage. It is believed she died on 23 Jul 1969 and is buried in Woronora Memorial Park, EE Rose Gdn 23, Plot 0151.
